Stray Dog Reaches the Summit of Egypt’s Pyramid – Must-See
An unusual sighting on one of Egypt’s iconic pyramids has caught the attention of social media. During a paragliding trip over the ancient Pyramids of Giza earlier this week, U.S. paraglider Marshall Mosher and his group were treated to a surprising sight— a dog roaming the summit of the Khafre Pyramid, the second-tallest of the three great pyramids.
Mosher, who was flying over the famous landmark at sunrise, initially spotted something moving at the top of the pyramid. “We saw something running back and forth, and one of us even thought it was a mountain lion,” he told CNN Travel. After zooming in on their phones, they realized it wasn’t a wild animal, but a stray dog chasing birds atop the 448-foot pyramid.
The sight of a dog on top of the pyramid was unexpected, given that access to the pyramids’ summits is restricted. “It was surprising to see him up there because people aren’t allowed on the pyramids,” Mosher added.
Concerned at first, Mosher wondered if the dog was trapped. “I thought maybe he was stuck up there,” he said. But after considering the situation, he figured the dog had found its way up and could likely find a way down. “If he got himself up there, he can probably get down unless he found some secret portal to teleport himself,” Mosher joked.
The paragliders checked again the next day to see if the dog was still at the top. This time, they couldn’t spot him, but another adventurer later shared a video showing what appeared to be the same dog safely descending from the pyramid.

Dog Spotted on Egypt’s Great Pyramid Goes Viral
The footage of the dog quickly went viral on social media, amassing millions of views on Instagram. Mosher, who often creates content around his adventures, was surprised by how much attention the video received. “I thought flying over the pyramids was interesting enough, but no one seemed to care about that,” he laughed, acknowledging the viral success of the dog’s adventure.
The Great Pyramids of Giza, especially the pyramid of Khafre, are iconic symbols of ancient Egypt. Built thousands of years ago, they attract millions of tourists each year. However, stray animals, especially dogs, are not uncommon in the area. Mosher explained that hundreds of stray dogs roam the pyramids complex, often spotted around the base. This leaves some uncertainty as to whether the dog spotted on top of Khafre was the same one seen in the viral video.
While the video sparked amusement online, it also drew comments from people referencing Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of the dead, often depicted as a man with a jackal’s head. The connection between the stray dog and the ancient deity added an interesting layer to the viral moment, though it was all in good fun.
Mosher and his fellow paragliders were participating in an annual flying event organized by SkyOne Egypt. This event allows adventure-seekers the rare opportunity to fly over the pyramids and take in unique aerial views of the historic site. “I can understand why the dog wanted to go up there,” Mosher said. “It’s probably the best view a street dog in Cairo could get.”
This rare and unexpected encounter isn’t the first time animals have captured the attention of visitors in Giza. Stray dogs are often seen around Egypt’s historic sites, though it’s unusual for one to be spotted so high up on an ancient structure.
With the viral nature of the video, many have become interested in the stray dogs around the pyramids. Mosher mentioned that he is now looking into animal shelters in Cairo to help give these dogs safer environments. “There are so many stray dogs here, and they need help,” he said.
The viral success of the dog on top of the pyramid has added to the growing trend of unusual sightings at historic landmarks. It also highlighted the increasing use of paragliding as a way to experience Egypt’s ancient wonders from a different perspective. For Mosher, flying over the pyramids has become a memorable part of his adventure. However, he admits that this latest incident, featuring the unexpected dog on top of the pyramid, will remain one of the most talked-about moments of his career.
Beyond the humor and surprise of seeing a stray dog atop one of the world’s most famous structures, the story has also brought attention to the issue of stray animals in Egypt, particularly in tourist-heavy areas like Giza. Mosher and other animal advocates hope that the viral video will help raise awareness and possibly inspire more efforts to care for these animals.
In the end, it wasn’t just the breathtaking views of the pyramids that captured people’s attention, but the unusual presence of a dog at the summit. While the pyramids stand as symbols of ancient human achievement, it was a modern, four-legged adventurer who managed to steal the spotlight this time around.
The next time tourists visit the Pyramids of Giza, they might just look up and wonder if another adventurous dog is scaling the ancient stones. For now, the mysterious stray hound will remain a viral sensation, and Marshall Mosher’s unique experience will be remembered not just for the flight but for the dog who became an unexpected part of the journey.
