Former US President Donald Trump was swiftly escorted off stage after gunfire erupted during a rally in Pennsylvania in what appeared to be an assassination attempt. Footage captured him wincing and raising a hand to his right ear before ducking as a series of shots rang out. The US Secret Service agents quickly surrounded Trump and rushed him to a waiting vehicle, where he raised a fist as he was bundled inside.

In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump revealed that a bullet grazed the “upper part” of his right ear. Initially, his spokesperson mentioned that he was receiving treatment at a local medical center. “I immediately knew something was wrong when I heard a whizzing sound, felt the bullet tearing through my skin, and saw much bleeding,” Trump wrote.

Blood was visible on Trump’s ear and face as protection officers hurried him away. The suspect was shot dead at the scene by Secret Service officers, according to spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi. One bystander was killed, and two others were critically injured in the shooting. All three victims were identified as male.

Law enforcement sources informed CBS News that the attacker, who was armed with a rifle, fired from an elevated position a few hundred meters away. FBI agents leading the investigation have “tentatively identified” the gunman but have not established a motive. Special Agent Kevin Rojek confirmed that the incident is being treated as an assassination attempt, and investigators are using DNA to formally identify the suspect, who was not carrying ID.

Trump had just begun addressing his supporters in Butler, Pennsylvania, when the shots were fired. Multiple bangs were heard as Trump spoke about President Joe Biden’s administration. Several supporters holding placards behind Trump ducked as the shots rang out.

Witnesses suggested the gunshots might have come from a one-story building to the right of the stage. One witness, Greg, saw a suspicious person “bear crawling” on the roof of the building with a rifle and alerted the police. Tim, another attendee, described hearing a “barrage” of shots and saw the speaker on the right side of the stage coming down, likely due to a hit on the hydraulic lines.

Photos from the rally showed the chaotic aftermath, with Secret Service agents instructing the crowd to get down. Attendees, like Warren and Debbie, heard at least four gunshots and got on the ground as agents moved through the crowd, urging calm. Debbie recounted a heart-wrenching moment when a little girl beside her cried out, fearing for her life.

Republican Congressman Ronnie Jackson reported that his nephew sustained a minor neck injury in the shooting and was treated at the scene.
