Lady Gaga, Joaquin Phoenix Shine in ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Trailer
The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix as Harley Quinn and the Joker, premieres on October 4.
Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix used to believe life was a tragedy, but now they see it as a comedy.
The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, a sequel to the 2019 film Joker, shows the couple totally embracing their clownish joys. In the new trailer, which was released at CinemaCon on April 9, Joaquin reprises his role as the title character (real name Arthur Fleck), while Gaga plays the iconic Harley Quinn, who in the DC comics serves as the Joker’s lover and partner in crime, despite their toxic relationship.
Zazie Beetz will reprise her role from the original film, with newcomers Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, and Steve Coogan in unannounced roles.
The trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux (loosely translates from French as “madness together”) depicts Joaquin and Gaga locking eyes for the first time at Gotham’s Arkham Asylum, where Arthur found himself at the end of the 2019 film.
“I haven’t done anything with my life like you have,” Harley confesses Arthur, as the song “What the World Needs Now Is Love” plays to set the tone for their romance story. The duo dances beneath the moonlight and performs for people, as “Joker & Harley” appears on a theater stage behind them.
The Joker’s friendship with Arthur marks a significant shift, as he admits to being “not alone anymore,” exclaiming, “That’s what we should be talking about.”
The short ends with Joaquin’s Joker peering at Gaga’s Harley from behind plexiglass, telling her, “I wanna see the real you.”
Todd Philips’ film Joker was a critical and commercial success, getting 11 Oscar nominations and won Best Actor for Joaquin and Best Achievement in Music for composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. The film grossed $1 billion worldwide.
Fans will have to wait until the sequel’s Oct. 4 release to know what Gaga’s Harley has in store for the Joker.
