The remnants of Hurricane Helene have left a trail of devastation across Western North Carolina, with the iconic Biltmore Estate among the many locations impacted. Torrential rains and subsequent flooding caused widespread damage to homes, businesses, and tourist attractions, including one of the state’s most beloved sites. Biltmore Estate, a historic landmark known for its grandeur, has been forced to close its doors to the public until further notice. As of the latest reports, the estate is expected to remain closed until at least October 15, 2024.

Hurricane Helene’s Impact on Western North Carolina

Hurricane Helene, which made its way across the Southeast, brought unprecedented rainfall to the region, triggering major flooding in North Carolina. Western parts of the state, including Asheville and the surrounding areas, were particularly hard-hit by the storm’s remnants. The Swannanoa River, located near Biltmore Village, overflowed due to the heavy downpour, flooding homes, businesses, and historical landmarks.

The damage in Asheville and nearby communities has been described as catastrophic, with many properties submerged and vital infrastructure severely compromised. Roadways, bridges, and power lines were also affected, leaving thousands without access to critical services. While the full scale of the damage is still being assessed, officials and volunteers are working tirelessly to begin the recovery process.

Biltmore Estate Closes Indefinitely Due to Flood Damage

The 8,000-acre Biltmore Estate, situated in Asheville, is one of the largest and most visited private estates in the United States. Known for its luxurious architecture, sprawling gardens, and world-class wineries, the estate is a significant tourist attraction that draws millions of visitors annually. Unfortunately, it has not been spared from Hurricane Helene’s wrath.

According to the latest updates from the Biltmore Company, the estate sustained significant damage in certain parts, particularly low-lying areas like Biltmore Village. These sections, which include the entrance and nearby buildings, experienced major flooding and structural damage. Roads throughout the property were blocked, and several buildings suffered extensive water damage. Forested areas within the estate were also heavily impacted by wind damage.

Though much of the estate’s destruction is still being evaluated, the Biltmore team has confirmed that the main house, Conservatory, gardens, and hotels have been largely unaffected. However, it will take time to fully assess the damage to other parts of the property, such as the farm and roads leading to the main attractions. The Biltmore Estate has expressed its commitment to recovery, but officials caution that repairs could take weeks or even months, depending on the extent of the damage.

Rescue Efforts and Animal Safety

Amid the chaos caused by Hurricane Helene, one of the estate’s top priorities was ensuring the safety of its animals. Biltmore’s agricultural and equestrian teams worked tirelessly to protect the animals housed on the property. Sadly, a few animals were lost due to the extreme weather conditions, but the majority have been accounted for and are safe. The estate expressed deep sorrow for the loss but remains grateful for the team’s efforts in safeguarding the rest of the livestock.

Recovery efforts have begun in earnest, with crews working to clear roads and remove debris from the flooded areas. These efforts are essential not only for the recovery of the estate but also for ensuring that Biltmore can reopen its doors to visitors as soon as it is safe to do so. The team remains optimistic that they will be able to restore the estate to its former glory, though it will take time.

Closure and Rescheduling for Visitors

As of now, Biltmore Estate remains closed to all visitors, including Biltmore Annual Passholders, Vanderbilt Wine Club members, and Sporting Clay Club members. Guests who had planned to visit during this time are encouraged to reschedule their visit or request a refund through the Biltmore website. Those who had booked overnight stays between September 27 and October 15 have had their reservations automatically canceled, and a 12-month credit has been provided.

Biltmore has emphasized its commitment to providing updates and assistance to those affected by the closure. The estate’s team is working diligently to reschedule visits and ensure that guests can experience the magic of Biltmore once the property is safe to reopen.

Support for the Asheville Community

Beyond the boundaries of Biltmore Estate, the effects of Hurricane Helene have been devastating for the entire Asheville community. Flooding has caused significant damage in Biltmore Village, a historic area near the estate known for its charming architecture and vibrant local businesses. The River Arts District, a popular destination for art lovers, has also been severely impacted, with many galleries and studios sustaining flood damage.

The Biltmore Estate has expressed its heartfelt sympathy for the local community and has vowed to support recovery efforts in any way possible. In a recent statement, the estate’s leadership thanked the first responders, utility workers, and volunteers who have been working around the clock to assist in the recovery process. The team at Biltmore remains committed to doing their part in helping Asheville recover from this unprecedented disaster.

Looking Toward Recovery

As Western North Carolina begins the long road to recovery, there is hope that the region will bounce back stronger than ever. Biltmore Estate, with its historical significance and enduring appeal, remains a symbol of resilience for the local community. Though the damage is severe, the estate’s leadership and staff are determined to restore the property and welcome visitors back in the near future.

In the meantime, the team at Biltmore continues to work alongside local officials and organizations to provide aid to those affected by the storm. Efforts are being made to assess the full extent of the damage, clear debris, and begin the rebuilding process.

While Biltmore Estate and the surrounding areas face significant challenges, the outpouring of support from the community and beyond provides a glimmer of hope. With time and effort, Biltmore and Asheville will recover and once again be a thriving destination for tourists from around the world.

Butler, Curry lead Warriors past Grizzlies, into playoffs

Warriors Beat Grizzlie Clinch Playoff Spot with Butler Curry
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Jimmy Butler III and Stephen Curry responded by trying to shoot the Golden State Warriors into the playoffs, and they succeeded on Tuesday night, beating the Memphis Grizzlies, 121-116, and earning the seventh seed in the long and winding Western Conference postseason bracketing. The victory, part of the N.B.A. play-in tournament, means the Warriors will face the Houston Rockets in a best-of-seven first-round series beginning Sunday.

Butler had a monster game with 38 points, seven rebounds and six assists. A player with a reputation for clutch performances in high stakes games, “Playoff Jimmy” lived up to his moniker, making impactful plays at both ends of the floor. His energy helped relieve some pressure on Curry, who also had a huge night, scoring 37 points. Curry hit crucial shots late, including a baseline three-pointer with under two minutes to play, and another from the left wing with one minute remaining. He then added two important free throws with 5.4 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

The Grizzlies had one last opportunity to tie the game, but Santi Aldama failed to get the ball inbounds in time, resulting in a five-second violation that ended Memphis’s chances. Desmond Bane scored 30 points for Memphis, while Ja Morant added 22. The Grizzlies advance to face the winner of the Mavericks-Kings matchup for the final West playoff spot.

But the Golden State victory was not buoyed merely by star power, but solid team play. Butler turned in one of his best games since joining the Warriors at the trade deadline, making 12 of 20 shots and 12 of 18 free throws. It was his second straight game with 30 or more points and his highest output with the team. His aggressive play, particularly in important stretches, kept the Warriors in control even as Memphis mounted multiple runs.

Butler brought it back Golden State’s way with a steal and a dunk as Memphis started to hit its stride in the third quarter. Morant gave the Grizzlies a scare when he rolled his right ankle after stepping on Buddy Hield’s foot. In spite of the injury, he converted a three-point play that cut Memphis to within one point for a spell. Jaren Jackson Jr. had 18 points, while Zach Edey had 14 points and 17 rebounds. Edey hit two clutch free throws with 14.3 seconds left, but that wasn’t enough to change the course of the game.

Curry had it worse than his 52-point explosion against the Grizzlies’ defense earlier in the month. He went 9-for-22 from the field while enduring ongoing defensive pressure, especially from Scotty Pippen Jr., who fouled out. Curry never lost his nerve and he also never wavered in the game fixture when it still counted. He also collected eight rebounds and added four assists.

The game included numerous strong opening quarter by the Warriors highlighted by a run aided and abetted by Butler. He participated in four consecutive scoring plays, beginning with an assist to Gary Payton II for a backdoor dunk, followed by an alley-oop to Quinten Post for a three, and then a three-point basket and a traditional three-point play. Butler did not appear to be dealing with pain from the quadriceps injury he suffered in the Warriors’ previous game against the Clippers.

This victory meant that Golden State, a team that previously had never won a series in the play-in tournament before Tuesday, would take on the Memphis Grizzlies in an elimination game for the eighth and final playoff spot. Their seasons came to an end in both 2021 and 2024 during play-in games, including a gut-wrenching overtime defeat by Memphis at Chase Center in 2021. That history provided extra motivation for some veterans like Curry and Draymond Green, who were eager to not experience an early exit again.

The Warriors had wanted to avoid the play-in tournament entirely but that idea went out the window when they dropped their last regular-season game in overtime to the Clippers. That loss was their third at home in the final week of the season, and it also left their playoff path uncertain. But with this victory, they’ve secured their spot and now turn their attention to the coming series against Houston.

Golden State’s play indicates they are peaking at the right time. With Butler playing as well as he is next to Curry, they have a real dynamic duo to ride into the playoffs. Their resilience, chemistry and collective playoff experience could make them a dangerous foe for any team in the West.

When are taxes due? Here’s the last day to file, how to file an extension before Tuesday

Tax Deadline 2025: Final Day to File & Get an Extension
Reading Time: 3 minutes

And if you haven’t filed your taxes for 2025 yet, you’re cutting it close. Tax Day is fast approaching, and if you don’t know the status of your refund — or if you’ll get one — now’s the time to find out. With the deadline approaching, there’s a lot to know about the key dates, how to ask for extra time if you need it and how long you could wait for a refund, according to the Internal Revenue Service, which anticipates that nearly 140 million Americans will file taxes in 2023.

Your taxes are due on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. When April 15 falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline carries over to the following business day.” The deadline is extended to June 16, 2025, for Americans overseas. The timing matters, whether you’re filing electronically or mailing your return. For electronic submissions, your time zone and the date and time of your submission are what the IRS relies on to decide whether your return was timely filed. If you’re mailing a paper return, it must be properly addressed, postage must be paid, and the return must be postmarked on or before the due date.

If you are not quite ready to file by the deadline, the IRS has several options for requesting an extension. One is to file online for an automatic extension, using IRS Free File, which is open to everyone, no matter their income. Then there’s the traditional method of sending in Form 4868 — the Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File. You can also submit it via IRS e-filing partners or with assistance from a tax pro. When completing this form, estimate what you owe in taxes and then subtract any payments you made over the course of the year. Third, you can pay your estimated tax due online using one of the IRS payment options and check the box you are filing for an extension. This approach means you don’t have to file a separate extension form — and you’ll receive a confirmation number showing that the extension was granted.

There’s some good news for those living outside the United States: if you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living abroad as of the original tax filing deadline, you’re entitled to an automatic two-month extension without filing anything.

Once you file your taxes, you’ll likely be wondering when your refund will arrive. The “ Where’s My Refund? tool. To access it, you’ll need your Social Security number or individual taxpayer ID number, your filing status and the exact refund amount on your return. Once you enter the information, the system will tell you if it received your return, if your refund has been approved or if it has been sent. When your refund is issued, it can take up to five days to appear in your bank account, or several weeks if you’re waiting for a check in the mail.

For the most part, the IRS issues refunds in a reasonably timely manner — most of them in less than three weeks if you filed electronically. But they warn taxpayers not to count on receiving their refunds by any date, particular if the funds are intended for either a large purchase or an important payment to make. If additional review is required, some returns may take longer to process.

There are a number of reasons your refund might be delayed. The IRS says common reasons for such letters include an error or missing information on the return, complications arising from identity theft or fraud, or certain adjustments to the child tax credit or the recovery rebate credit. Delays may also affect taxpayers who file for the earned income tax credit or the additional child tax credit in some cases. If you filed Form 8379 — called the Injured Spouse Allocation — the review process will likely take longer, too. And even once the IRS sends your refund, it can take a few extra days depending on how your bank or credit union processes everything.

Filing your taxes doesn’t need to be stressful, but with the deadline looming, you should definitely not wait until the last minute. Whether you need more time or only you’re just waiting for your refund, figuring out how the process works and acting correctly now can help prevent you from pulling your hair out later.

Coachella 2025: desert festival balances the new and the nostalgia

Coachella 2025 Blends Legends, Heat & New-Age Performers
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Coachella festival 2023 is projected to be one of the most unforgettable in recen history. It’s not only because it will feature big stars, but also because of the extremely high temperatures that are set to scorch the desert venue. Located in California, the first weekend of the two-weekend event is forecasted to reach an alarming 103 degrees Fahrenheit which is supes the average for this time of year. Regardless of the intense heat, over 125,000 participants are expected to show up everyday, and all of them are excited to watch some of the greatest musicians of out time perform live.

Garinger confirmed Lady Gaga, Post Malone, and Green Day as the new headliners, showcasing a distinct boost in anticipation for the festival after last year’s sluggish sales. It sold better in 2024 with Doja Cat, Tyler, and Lana Del Rey. However, this year’s leading trio has an added 24% boost to global Spotify streaming, which increases the hype even more. The combination of energizing high-octane performances alongside nostalgic hits for long-time fans is cherished. Lady Gaga’s comeback is major—she headlined the event back in 2017, and actually filmed bits of A Star Is Born while she was there. Gaga is also expected to perform a range of her classics along with tracks from Mayhem, but in a recent interview she said that there are still many surprises to come, hinting at more undisclosed details.

Coachella 2025 has not only its big-name stars but also a widespread lineup of performers that cover diverse genres and generations. Charli XCX, Ed Sheeran, Missy Elliott, and Rema are taking the stage as some of the headliners. On the other hand, Lola Young, Shaboozey, Amyl and the Sniffers, underscores, and Glorilla are among the newcomers to the desert crowd. And, for nostalgia purpose, we also have some of the veteran performers such as Kraftwerk, Basement Jaxx, Jimmy Eat World, The Go-Go’s and many more, who will perform on different stages of the festival.

The Prodigy is expected to deliver one of the most sensitive moments of the weekend. This will be their first time back at Coachella after the death of their front man Keith Flint in 2019. Band member Liam Howlett said they will not do a tribute show, as the performance will instead honor the spirit and legacy of Flint; not only on stage but off stage too, as he was an essential part to the band’s creative process.Coachella 2025 Blends Legends, Heat & New-Age Performers

Another throwback act, Weezer, is also drawing attention – not just for their performance, but for off-stage drama. Bassist Scott Shriner’s wife, Jillian Lauren, was recently shot by police after reportedly waving a gun at police during an unrelated investigation. Now, she is set to face attempted murder charges. Regardless, Weezer, as usual, is still slated to perform as Shriner remarked to reporters, “See you at Coachella.”

Not all scheduled artists will be able to make it, unfortunately. FKA twigs has had to pull out of the lineup due to ongoing visa problems, which, as some sources claim, stem from her production team not completing the requisite paperwork in time. In an emotional Instagram message, she laments about the inability to perform, saying it ‘devastates’ her. These problems are becoming all too common for overseas performers given the rising costs and delays. One booking agent noted that obtaining visas for Coachella performers can run close to $8,000, especially when expedited due to slow processing times.

The rising difficulty and expense of international travel for performers is just one the many challenges facing music festivals today. Coachella, with its culture benchmark status, has to juggle things like inflation and logistical burdens associated with travel and staging.

Although there are difficulties to work through, the spirit of Coachella is still intact. It still brings together different groups of people who share a fascination for music and culture. For numerous individuals, the combination of new music with nostalgic acts and the ever-changing weather in the desert makes Coachella an unparalleled experience. As the weekend approaches, individuals globally will tune in to witness how this festival adapts to the ever-changing climate, culture, and other factors.
