In 2017, three years after “consciously uncoupling” from Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin reconnected with actress Dakota Johnson. However, unlike his marriage to Paltrow, which was quite public, Martin has managed to keep the facts of his relationship with Johnson private. So much so, in fact, that the couple has reportedly been engaged for years without the world knowing – at least until recently.

Johnson has been wearing a large emerald ring on her left hand since December 2020, which also happens to be her engagement ring. While Sarah and Martin declined to comment on the ring at the time, a source revealed to People that they “got engaged years ago” and are in “no rush to get married.”

Johnson and Martin were observed at a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles, where a source described them as “cozy, laughing, and affectionate” during their dinner date.

2018: Dakota Johnson subtly confirms she’s dating Chris Martin.

Almost a year after they originally started dating rumors, Johnson officially admitted Martin was her boyfriend. In an interview with Tatler, she claimed, “I’m not going to talk about it, but I am very happy.“

2019: Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin quietly make their couple debut. 

Johnson and Martin continued to maintain a low profile, making their first public appearance together at Forest Whitaker’s Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative event in New York City. The couple did not walk the red carpet together, but they did take a cute selfie together, with Johnson laying her hand on Martin’s knee.

Paltrow praised her ex-husband’s new girlfriend during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in January 2020.

“I love her,” Paltrow stated. “I see how that would appear strange since it is unusual. But I think, in this case, having gone through it repeatedly, I simply adore her. I usually think of the ampersand sign – what else can you bring in instead of resisting or feeling insecure about? There’s so much juice in leaning into something like that.”

According to a source, Johnson and Martin like living outside the city. “They both enjoy being outside and frequently go for walks on the beach. “They also support local restaurants,” the insider explained.

2022: Dakota Johnson provides rare insight into her connection with Chris Martin.

In an interview with Elle, Johnson shared intimate details about her relationship with Martin and their preferred activities.

“We’ve been together for quite a while,  and we go out sometimes, but we both work so much that it’s nice to be at home and be cozy and private,” she said with a grin. “Most of the partying takes place inside my house.”

2023: Dakota Johnson credits Chris Martin for pulling her out of her depression.

Johnson disclosed at the 2023 Hope for Depression Research Foundation luncheon, where she won the 2023 Hope Award for Depression Advocacy, that Martin supports her during difficult times. “A few weeks ago, I was having a low day,” she explained. “And my partner said to me, ‘Are you really struggling?’ and I said ‘No?'”

Dakota Johnson considers herself “lucky” to have had the opportunity to find her own sexuality. The 34-year-old actress, who is the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, has stated that she considers herself fortunate to have grown up in such an open-minded environment.

In March 2024, it was reported that the two have been engaged since 2020 (when the rumors first began) and that Johnson’s giant emerald ring is actually an engagement ring.
